Collection Era Vol. 2 (1981)

The opening track on this disc is called "Merz Rock 1" and lemme tell you somethin': he ain't kiddin'. There's drums, and not just free jazz soloing this time, but an honest-to-goodness rhythm. A steady tempo that occasionally settles into 4/4 time for a brief spell before wandering off again. Still, it's a big step. Five discs in and he's already sold out.

"Merz Rock 2" is a longer version of the same thing: sort-of steady beat, bunch of noise over it. The rest of the album is a bunch more standard noise tracks until the last track. "Merztronics Rhythm Mix" sounds, believe it or not, like Can. Well the beat does anyway. And on top of that there's more noise. Good noise.

I like this one. The Merz's most accessible yet.
